on the hindquarters at the age of about 3 months. In the following 1 to 2 months, hair is lost from these regions revealing raised patches of bright pink skin. Each patch is about 20 mm long and 15 mm wide, has a coarse texture, one or two characteristic folds (Pl. 1, Fig. 1) and a musty odour. Histologically, the skin contains very greatly enlarged holocrine sebaceous glands (Pl. 1, Fig. 2). These specialized sebaceous patches persist for as long

متن کاملHypothalamo-hypophysial control of ovulation in the vole (Microtus agrestis).
Electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus of the vole, Microtus agrestis, usually results in ovulation, whereas stimulation of areas in the posterior hypothalamus do not. Ovulation can also be elicited by injections of sheep median-eminence extracts, and by preparations ofsheep luteinizing hormone. Observations on the number of corpora lutea formed, and ripe Graafian follicles remaini...
متن کاملEndemic Hantavirus in Field Voles, Northern England
We report a PCR survey of hantavirus infection in an extensive field vole (Microtus agrestis) population present in the Kielder Forest, northern England. A Tatenale virus-like lineage was frequently detected (≈17% prevalence) in liver tissue. Lineages genetically similar to Tatenale virus are likely to be endemic in northern England.
متن کاملSpecies-specific limitation of vole population growth by least weasel predation: facilitation of coexistence?
Interspecific competition is usually understood as different species competing directly with each other for limited resources. However, predators can alter such competitive interactions substantially. Predation can promote the coexistence of species in a situation where it would otherwise be impossible, for example if a tradeoff between the competitive abilities and predation resistance of the ...
متن کاملPopulation cycles of small rodents are caused by specialist predators: or are they?
Predation by specialist mammalian predators has been hypothesized to be the primary cause of multi-annual density fluctuations (‘population cycles’) in voles. Using a series of replicated field experiments, Isla Graham and Xavier Lambin have now shown that specialist mammalian predators are neither necessary nor sufficient to drive field vole Microtus agrestis population cycles. These findings ...
